The Great Thomas Sankara - (born 21 December 1949, Yako, Upper Volta, French West Africa, Assassinated, 15 October 1987) was a Burkinabè military officer, Marxist revolutionary and Pan-Africanist, who came to power at the young age of 33 through an anti-imperialist military coup, or more appropriately an ideological realignment of economic, political and social values. Sankara served as president of Burkina Faso from 1983 until his assassination in 1987.
During his tenure, Sankara launched numerous social, ecological and economic programmes much to the benefit of the people. He renamed the country from the French colonial name Upper Volta to Burkina Faso ('Land of Incorruptible People'), with its people being called Burkinabé ('upright people'). 
Sankars's programs focused on self-reliance and anti-imperialism, he opposed foreign aid saying that "he who feeds you, controls you." He achieved agrarian self-sufficiency, and focused heavily on land reform, education, and healthcare, undertaking many infrastructural projects including building schools, healthcare centres and water reservoirs. Soon the entire country was connected by vast roadways and railways. Over 700 km (430 mi) of railway, with every brick, steel and stone laid by the Burkinabé people without a white cent or any aid from outside.
Sankara's life was cut short by the reprobate, tyrant Blaise Compaoré under the instruction of his French colonial masters. However, they  only succeeded in destroying the physical body of Sankara, his spirit is still alive and well inspiring Afrikan people globally. As we are seeing today in Burkina Faso his infamous words hold true, "While revolutionaries as individuals can be murdered, you cannot kill ideas."
