The Immortal Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti - (born 15, October 1938, Abeokuta, British Nigeria, died, 2 August 1997(aged 58) was a Nigerian musician, bandleader, composer, political activist, and Pan-Africanist. He is largely credited as the creator of Afrobeat, a Nigerian music genre that combines West Afrikan music with jazz, funk, highlife, and traditional Afrikan chants and rhythms. However, Fela never called his music Afrobeats but the more sophisticated Afrikan Classical Sound (according to Seun Kuti). 
Fela can be described as one of the great black musicians and political voices of the 20th century, his music fearlessly addressed sociopolitical and economic hardships instituted by the neocolonial government in Nigeria and by extension Africa as a whole. However, his music has international significance to black people everywhere who share a similar experience wherever they are found in the world. 
He fought with a virile zeal and an unflinching spirit for the liberation of Afrikan people even after the Muhammadu Buhari-led government in Nigeria killed his mother, arrested him over 200 times, burnt down his residence (Kalakuta Republic) and, destroyed his property, music, instruments, and equipment everywhere he went. This only made Fela even more defiant. 
As Fela famously said, "Music is the Weapon." As opposed to many negro musicians who use this weapon to degrade, denigrate and seductively hypnotize black people in service of white domination. Fela did the opposite, he recognized the power of art to influence and believed it should have political meaning, hence he weaponized his music and used it as a powerful tool to fight against European imperialism.
