The Great Dr. Huey Percy Newton was an African-American revolutionary and political activist. Newton is credited as the co-founder of the Black Panther Party (originally the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense) and operated as the leader of the organization and the Minister of Defense during his lifetime.
The Black Panther Party (BPP) focused heavily on the right to self-defense for black people. They believed that violence or the threat of violence was essential to bringing about social and political change. The party advocated for, better jobs, housing, Afrikan-centered education, and justice. They also fought heavily against police brutality, wanton murder, and the mass incarceration of Black people in America. 
Under the leadership of Newton the BPP developed over 60 survival programs, the most famous of these being the Black Panther Free Breakfast Program in the 1970s, which fed thousands of impoverished black children daily. Other programs included the establishment of the Oakland Community School, offering martial arts classes, dance classes, food banks, medical clinic, legal advice seminars, clothing banks, and their own ambulance service among many others.
Newton earned his first degree at Merrit College in 1966, Associate of Arts. During his time at the college, he played a role in getting the first African-American history course adopted as a part of the curriculum. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in the social philosophy program of History of Consciousness from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1980.
